12/04/2011: SFPCG JOINS COMMEMORATION OF THE FALL OF BATAAN

San Francisco, California – The Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco joined the Bay Area Filipino American community in the commemoration of the 69th anniversary of the Fall of Bataan during simple rites held at the Veterans War Memorial Building in San Francisco last Saturday, 09 April 2011. Consul General Marciano A. Paynor, Jr. was among the list of dignitaries including California State Assembly Speaker Pro Tempore Fiona Ma and U.S. Army Lt. Col. Marion Manuta who thanked the Filipino World War II veterans for their sacrifices and courage in offering their lives on the line in the defense of freedom.

 

The ceremony was highlighted with the presentation of medals to two survivors of the Bataan Death March, former U.S. army soldier George Cawley and Mr. Greg Ferrer, a Filipino and a member of the Philippine Scouts. Col. Manuta presented the Purple Heart medal to the two veterans.

 

The ceremony, which was also held in commemoration of POW Recognition Day, was organized by the American Legion Bataan Post 600, the West Bay Pilipino Multi-Service Center, One World Institute, and the Federation of Philippine American Chambers of Commerce. END.
