10/06/2011: Consul General Marciano A. Paynor, Jr.'s Independence Day Message

Isang maligayang bati at makabuluhang pagdiriwang ng ika-113 anibersaryo ng Kalayaan ng Pilipinas! Greetings as I wish you all a happy and meaningful celebration of the 113th anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine independence!

For the first time in the San Francisco Bay Area, we will have a gala celebration at the grand rotunda of the San Francisco City Hall to mark three momentous events; the 113th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence, the 150th Anniversary of the Birth of Philippine National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal and the 50th Anniversary of the San Francisco-Manila Sister City Committee.

This year we celebrate with the theme: Kalayaan 2011: Paninindigan ng Bayan, to emphasize freedom as achieved through the resolute stand of the Filipino people.

Over a century ago our gallery of heroes took a stand and fought for freedom and independence. Foremost among these gallant heroes is the great Dr. Jose Rizal, patriot, polymath, martyr and man for all ages.

As we commemorate Dr. Rizal’s 150th birth anniversary this year with the theme” Rizal Haligi ng Bayan” we recognize our national hero as the pillar of the nation. His life work and ultimate sacrifice spurred the nascent Filipino nation to independence more than a hundred years ago. Today, he remains an enduring inspiration and model to Filipinos all over the world.

This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of the San Francisco-Manila Sister City Committee (SFMSCC). Through the years, the SFMSCC has deepened the friendship and cooperation of the peoples of the great cities of San Francisco and Manila in various levels of cultural and economic exchanges.

I therefore urge the Filipinos in the San Francisco Bay Area to reflect on the essence and meaning of this year’s celebrations as I call on all of you to likewise steel your resolve and make a stand, individually and collectively, as you find your rightful place in your adopted homeland of America while keeping a watchful eye on your beloved Philippines.

Maraming salamat po at Mabuhay!
