04/10/2012: FOUR FINALIST CLEAR 3RD KULINARYA SEMI-FINALS
The Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco announced four finalists for this year’s Kulinarya, following the conclusion of a successful Semi-Final culinary showdown held on 29 September 2012 at the Social Hall of the Philippine Center in downtown San Francisco.
The four finalists, two each from the amateur and professional divisions, are now gearing up to unveil their interpretations of the Philippines’ rich culture and heritage through food at the Final Round of Kulinarya in December, which will feature a live cooking showdown.
From the Amateur Division, Joycelyn Vergara and Justin Hulog will proceed to the final competition; Jerrick Figueroa and Thomas Weibull, on the other hand, emerged victorious from the Professional Division of the Semi-Final round.
The other Filipino culinary specialists who participated in the Semi-Final round include Rennel Atienza and Edna Murray, in the Amateur Division; and Julsunthie Calalo, Larry Lontoc, and RJ Quiambao, in the Professional Division.
The championship round will pit the San Francisco finalists against each other and one other competitor per division from Southern California, making it a three-way fight per division. The Southern California candidates will have qualified in their own Semi-Finals Round, held in Los Angeles this year.
The winner in the Professional Division will receive $1000 in cash, a free Kulinarya tour to selected culinary destinations in the Philippines that includes a round-trip ticket to the Philippines via Philippine Airlines and two nights’ stay at a deluxe hotel in Metro Manila, and an all-expenses paid trip to the annual EAT Vancouver World Culinary Travel Expo with the Philippine Department of Tourism, where he will have an opportunity to showcase Philippine culinary delicacies before an international audience.
The winner in the Amateur Division will receive $500 in cash and a free Kulinarya tour to selected culinary destinations in the Philippines that includes a round-trip ticket to the Philippines via Philippine Airlines and two nights’ stay at a deluxe hotel in Metro Manila.
Kulinarya is an annual Filipino Culinary Showdown held to elevate the consciousness and appreciation of Philippine cuisine, further improve the quality of taste and presentation of Philippine dishes, and, most importantly, highlight the culinary skill and talent of Filipino-American culinary hobbyists and specialists in the Bay Area and the Northern American Region.
The event is organized by the Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco together with its attached agencies, the Department of Tourism, the Department of Trade and Industry, the Philippine National Police, and the Philippine Center Management Board.
