20/02/2013: Invitation: Moving Forward: Providing Mental Health and Wellness Services to the Filipino Community

Invitation: Moving Forward: Providing Mental Health and Wellness Services to the Filipino Community
Wednesday,  February 27th, 2013, 5:30pm-8:30pm at the Bayanihan Community Center
1010 Mission Street, San Francisco.

The Filipino Mental Health Initiative-SF (FMHI-SF) has been working with passion and commitment to developing culturally appropriate and effective mental health services for the Filipino community since June 2012.  We have collected and reviewed past needs assessments over the past 20 years in SF, (Thank you for all the hard work and vision of the Filipino Mental Health Taskforce in the 80's and 90's in conducting these assessments).  FMHI-SFconducted several focus groups and administered surveys in Fall 2012 to further hone in on the most effective approaches in reaching our community.  With this research and provider input from our June 2012 community forum, FMHI-SF has developed a 3-year program proposal which will soon be submitted for funding from SFDPH (MHSA Act) to provide anti-stigma outreach and education about Mental Health, build capacity in providing culturally appropriate and effective mental health services for Filipinos in SF, as well as increasing access to mental health services for our community.
At this point we are reaching out to you-- service providers, youth workers, educators, and other community workers who work with the Filipino community-- for your support and feedback on the developed proposal and ask you to join us as we form work groups to plan and implement the much needed services for the Filipino community, from community support groups, peer-educator facilitated mental wellness educational workshops, quarterly provider support gatherings and trainings, an annual provider retreat, an annual Filipino mental wellness community conference, anti-stigma digital storytelling, theater performances, and media campaign to a mental health intern training program.  There is much work to do! And we're calling on the village to join us!
We're hoping you and your colleagues who service SF Filipinos can attend this discussion on Wednesday, February 27th at 5:30pm-8:30pm at the Bayanihan Community Center. Dinner will be provided.
Please RSVP to Sheila Rivera at sm.rivera@gmail.com as space is limited.
