03/03/2014: SEARCH IS ON FOR THE 2014 DELEGATES TO THE FILIPINO AMERICAN YOUTH LEADERSHIP PROGRAM (FYLPro) IN THE PHILIPPINES

Philippine Ambassador Jose L. Cuisia, Jr. announced yesterday the search for the third batch of outstanding young Filipino Americans, who will be groomed as leaders of their communities and partners in advancing interests of Filipino Americans.  Ambassador Cuisia made the announcement during a youth forum at the University of Maryland in College Park, which was organized in collaboration with the Filipino Intercollegiate Networking Dialogue – District VI and the Filipino Young Professionals – DC.

Launched in 2012 as part of Ambassador Cuisia’s advocacy to reach out to the youth, the FYLPro initiative aims to tap outstanding young Filipino Americans who possess a sincere desire to be engaged in their respective communities and promote the Philippines’ further development.  The immersive program will afford them the opportunity to meet and dialogue with the highest officials and policymakers in the Philippines, leaders of industry, legislators, media, artists and cultural experts, entrepreneurs (both traditional and social), as well as innovators in different fields.  It will be held in Manila from July 24 to 27, 2014.

For the past two years, the Philippine Embassy and Consulates General in the U.S. launched the search in the States under their respective jurisdictions for individuals who meet the following criteria:

  • No younger than 18 years old or no older than 40 years old by July 15, 2014;
  • Ready and capable of undertaking travel to the Philippines by that date (i.e. have a valid passport for international travel), and be able to participate both in the 9th Ambassadors, Consuls General, and Tourism Directors Tour (ACGTDT) and the FYLPro;
  • Have potential or demonstrated leadership skills within their school, community, workplace or other area of involvement; and
  • Have potential or demonstrated involvement in the Filipino American community, or in issues and/or activities that align with the interests and issues of the Filipino American community or the Philippines.

The second FYLPro, held from 6 to 9 July 2013 in the Philippines, built on the success of the first-ever program, which yielded a remarkable batch of young Filipino Americans who continue to embark on different advocacies to help promote further progress in the Philippines and engagement with the multi-faceted Filipino American community.

FYLPro delegates have gone to undertake, among others, political advocacy initiatives, cultural and tourism promotion programs, social entrepreneurship activities, education innovations, Filipino American heritage projects, voter awareness and education, and have even launched political campaigns of their own. This year, FYLPro delegates have taken the initiative to organize the Filipino Young Leaders’ Summit in Waipahu, Hawaii. The one-day summit, which will take place on May 3, 2014, intends to bring young leaders together to empower, inspire, and discuss solutions on how to advance Filipino American advocacies in similar communities across the nation. In partnership with the Ayala Foundation Inc. (AFI), this year’s edition of the FYLPro hopes to continue to attract more young Filipino American leaders who will be among the movers and shakers among the emerging generation of Filipino Americans. Much of the participants’ expenses, including airfare, accommodations, local transportation and meals, will be shouldered by program sponsors.

The deadline for the submission of applications and documentary requirements is May 25, 2014. The names of the chosen delegates will be announced on the website of the Embassy on June 3, 2014.
