20/06/2014: DALY CITY COMMEMORATES 116TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE PROCLAMATION OF PHILIPPINE INDEPENDENCE

San Francisco -For the very first time, aFlag Raising Ceremony was held at Daly City Hall to commemorate the 116thAnniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence on June 9, 2014.

Mayor David Canepaand  Philippine Consul General Henry Bensurto, Jr.- in his first official event after arriving in San Francisco to assume his post,  raised the Philippine flag. Officials from the Philippine Consulate and Daly City and members of the Filipino American community attended this event.

I am very touched by this event, which demonstrates how the Daly city government led by Mayor Canepa values the Filipino American community in the city” remarked Consul General Bensurto. He expressed the

hope that  “the commemoration of Philippine Independence day overseas, such as this event in Daly City, would evoke a strong sense of patriotism among overseas Filipinos, particularly in thecontext of what is happening in the Philippines,”   and it also reminds us all that the Philippines, as an independent, peace and freedom loving nation, shall continue to positively engage other countries and peoples in all areas.

Mayor Canepa in his remarks and in the Proclamation he presented to the Consul General said the event was “Daly City’s way of honoring and giving value to its Filipino and Filipino-American residents for having a strong commitment to family, service, faith and hard work, and echoes the belief on the valuable contributions of the Filipinos and Filipino Americans to their communities.”

Daly City is  one of the U.S. cities with the highest population concentration of  Filipinos and Filipino Americans.

On June 21, Saturday. An SF Kalayaan2014 celebration will be held at the Union Square in San Francisco.  On this day as part of its ongoing overseas voter registration for the upcoming presidential elections in 2016,  the Consulate will also be conducting on-site registration at the Kalayaan Celebration booth.

If you are a Filipino citizen who will be at least 18 years of age on May 1, 2016, you are eligible to register to vote! Registration is free, and may be done at the Consulate during its hours of business. Applicants should bring a photocopy of your valid Philippine passport’s data page or Oath of Allegiance to register! Forms will be made available at the Consulate’s booth, located on the Stockton side of Union Square.
