27 March 2017 SAN FRANCISCO — The Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco held its second session of the Talakayan sa Konsulado at the Philippine Consulate General’s Consular Services Lounge on March 13.
Consul General Henry S. Bensurto, Jr. emphasized the importance of Talakayan as a platform for providing practical information to Filipino audience who are availing themselves of the services in the Consulate General. Consul General Bensurto stressed that, consistent with the saying “knowledge is power,” the Consulate General conducts Talakayan to equip our kababayans with information which can empower them as they face the challenges of being in a different environment and culture.
This month’s Talakayan resource persons were from Upwardly Global, a non-profit organization that helps immigrants, refugees and asylees rebuild their careers in the United States. Mr. Lex Duey, Upwardly Global’s Senior Outreach Associate and a first generation Filipino-American, shared that more than 1.8 million immigrants in the U.S., including Filipinos, who are college-educated are either unemployed or significantly underemployed. Upwardly Global’s goal is to assist these skilled immigrants and refugees and integrate them to the professional workforce of the U.S. As of December 2015, Upwardly Global was able to help 3000 job seekers, which redounds to USD 32 million economic impact.
Three alumni from Upwardly Global shared their respective experiences citing that practical tips from Upwardly Global on specific concerns of job-seekers such as how to craft effective resume, how to conduct one’s self during job interviews, how to build networks, among others, helped them build their careers in the United States.
The presentation of Upwardly Global was followed by an open forum and a consultation to those interested in the free services of the organization.
The Talakayan sa Konsulado is part of the Consulate’s program to “Spark, Connect, Empower” the Filipino-American community. The program aims to elevate the profile of the Filipino and the Philippines by involving the Filipino community through programs and activities that would generate their interest and participation. The Talakayan intends to provide relevant information to the Filipino-American audience on topics that are timely, interesting and would be helpful to them as they assimilate to a new country and culture.
