09/05/2017: FILIPINO-AMERICAN COMMUNITY HOLDS OPEN HOUSE OF THE FILIPINO CENTER PLAZA COMPUTER LEARNING CENTER

The Filipino Plaza Center held an Open House at the newly-renovated Computer Learning Center in Stockton, California, on Monday, 10 April 2017.

Mr. Frank Gatdula, the Social Service Coordinator of the Filipino Plaza Center, invited the Philippine Consulate to be present during the Open House, which showcased the newly renovated Computer Learning Center.  Situated beside the Filipino Center, a low-income multi-family apartment community in downtown Stockton, the Computer Learning Center is a project envisioned to create a united, strong and self-sufficient Community.

16-year-old Filipino-American Nathaniel Chien was instrumental in upgrading the computer stations.  He and a group of high school volunteers will make themselves available for a few hours after school to provide tutorials for youngsters and to assist adults in continued learning and job readiness programs through computer training, helping them to create resumes, access the Economic Development Department and Cal Jobs online, and use programs to achieve a General Education Diploma (GED).

Consul General Henry S. Bensurto, Jr. congratulated the Community leaders, headed by Dr. Jose Bernardo and Filipino Center President Doris Unsod for their desire in providing avenues for the Community members to better themselves and for assisting them in achieving self-sufficiency.  In the spirit of the Consulate’s thrust to Spark* Connect* Empower* the Filipino-American Community, Consul General Bensurto thanked Nathaniel Chien, whose example as an involved millennial gives hope that the Filipino connection remains alive even within the youth.

Consul General Bensurto took the opportunity to invite the Community to participate in the Ambassadors’ Tour, bringing with him San Francisco’s Tourism Director Pura Suanding-Molintas and Ms. Lyn Abad of Pacific Air Leisure Services to network with the Filipino Community of Stockton.

Deputy Consul General Jaime Ramon T. Ascalon and Consul Carlyn A. Monastrial were present to answer questions from the Community about the services that the Consulate offers. END
