04/11/2010: ISO ASSIGNS CODES OF PH AND PHL TO THE PHILIPPINES
The Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco wishes to announce that effective 20 October 2010, the Philippines shall officially be referred to as PH and PHL, the two-letter and three-letter codes respectively assigned by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) for member countries.
The ISO has developed its ISO 3166-1 codes to specifically identify all its member countries. The codes assigned to the Philippines are PH and PHL. Thus, the use of the initials RP (for Republic of the Philippines) and PI (Philippine Islands) when referring to the Philippines will no longer be used or accepted as they are not in accordance with the ISO 3166-1 and may only lead to ambiguity and confusion.
The Department of Foreign Affairs in Manila has instructed all Philippine Foreign Service Posts to adopt these two codes in referring to the Philippines in compliance with the ISO directive.
